Spring is Here: A Creative Awakening
As the days stretch longer and the sun peeks through more often, I can’t help but feel a spark of creativity lighting up within me. It never ceases to amaze me how the change in seasons can affect my mood and energy, and this year I’m noticing it more than ever. Living rurally now has allowed me to truly embrace the quieter, slower pace of winter. Without the bright street lights or the usual hustle of a the town, the darker, shorter days brought a sense of peace I’ve never experienced before.
Instead of fighting the season’s rhythm, I let myself slow down. The lack of daylight meant less time spent in the studio, but it also provided a welcomed opportunity to rest and recharge. I found myself listening to the distant calls of the neighbouring owls, taking in the stillness and embracing the slower pace of life. Venturing out onto frosted moors, and immersing myself in nature, has produced a strong bank of visual imagery both on my camera and in my mind.
But now, with spring on the horizon everything is beginning to change once more. The longer days and a few bursts of sunshine have already made a significant difference in my creative energy. I realise I’m definitely someone who thrives on sunlight. It seems to awaken something within me – my mind is sharper, my ideas flow more freely, and I can feel that creative fire reigniting again. It’s clear: the sun plays a huge role in my ability to feel inspired, and I can’t wait to dive back into my studio practice with renewed enthusiasm.
This spring is shaping up to be a busy one. On March 16th I’ll be opening my studio doors again, inviting visitors to see what I’ve been working on. April brings two exciting external workshops – one at RHS Rosemoor and another with the Mill End Hotel on Dartmoor. These workshops are wonderful opportunities to connect with new people and share my knowledge, ideas and inspiration, whilst igniting it for others.
Additionally, I’m thrilled to be hosting the NEW Creative Kin, a monthly drawing session that starts on April 7th from my home studio. This friendly gathering is a chance for local creatives to come together, exchange ideas and of course, create. I can’t wait to meet more fellow artists, designers, and makers from the local area. If you'd like to join us, please just drop me an email for more information.
With all that ahead, I’m looking forward to a spring filled with fresh energy and plenty of new beginnings. The buds are starting to appear and I can certainly feel the promise of creativity blooming. So here’s to longer days, sunshine, and a season of growth – both in nature and in my creative practice.
Bring on the sun, and let the spring begin!
